C-3229 D-4,814 MULTICYLINDER SWASH PLATE COMPRESSOR PISTON RING ARRANGEMENT Abstract of the Disclosure A compact lightweight multicylinder swash plate compressor is disclosed having a metallic double- ended piston with piston heads reciprocated in aligned metallic cylinder bores. Each piston head has a diametrical dimension substantially less than the diametrical dimension of its respective bore to provide a substantial annular space therebetween and a solid seal-support ring of slippery material is expanded over each piston head and contracts into a circum- ferential groove therein. Each ring is sufficiently thick that the memory recovery thereof after further contraction forced by a tool causes the ring to sealingly engage its respective bore immediately after assembly with its piston head therein. The metal of the piston head on opposite sides of the groove is thereby pre- vented from touching the metal of its respective bore throughout its reciprocation in the bore. Each ring groove is formed with a plurality of projections which are spaced about and project outward from the bottom thereof. The projections project sufficiently outward and are configured so that they substantially bite or imbed themselves in the underside of the ring mounted thereover during assembly of the piston heads with the rings thereon in their respective bores.
