The multifrequency electromagnetic surveying method and system generate a cyclic waveform consisting of a repeating sequence of sinusoidal half- cycles and/or cycles of various frequencies. The cyclic waveform is applied to the coil of a transmitter to produce an electromagnetic field propagated through an area under investigation. A receiver comprises a coil to receive the electromagnetic field having propagated through the area under investigation, and an analysing circuit to extract, for each frequency of the waveform cycles, parameters of interest from the received electromagnetic field. The parameters of interest include in-phase and in-quadrature components of the amplitude of the electromagnetic field at each cycle frequency.
