A multifunctional control unit is operable by a user to control operation of a microscope. The microscope includes a motorized stage, slide holder and focusing mechanism and a plurality of lenses offering different magnifications. The multifunctional control unit which preferably takes the form of a mouse includes a spherical roller and corresponding encoders to detect lateral movement of the mouse. A thumbwheel on the side of the mouse is operable to control movement in a third dimension. Lateral movements of the mouse may be used to control the speed at which the slide is moved under the lens, or may be used to position desired portions of the slide under the lens. Rotation of the thumbwheel may be used to cause vertical movement of the lens to focus the image being viewed. Other functions may be performed by use of buttons on the mouse.
