ABSTRACT To reduce the complexity and cost of the optics required for electro-optic line printing and similar functions, a multigate light valve having converging electrodes is illuminated by a light beam which converges toward the entrance pupil of an imaging lens. The electrodes and the light beam converge toward that point with substantially the same angle of convergence so that the light beam effectively remains longitudinally parallel to the electrodes as it passes through the electro-optic element of the light valve.
