Multimedia bioreactor and periodic washing method therefor ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The bioreactor consists of a basin which holds two superimposed layers of biomedia supported by a false floor. The waste liquid is poured over the top of the bioreactor, and seeps through the layers of media and into the nozzles mounted on the false floor. The upper layer of media consists of low density buoyant material, the lower layer of media consists of non-buoyant material. The upper media layer performs mainly reduction of the organic load in the waste water, while the lower layer completes the biological degradation with in addition retaining the solids in suspension in the waste water. Water and compressed air are fed from under the false floor, to enable periodic backwash cleaning of the bioreactor, so as to remove the accumulation of retained material. The extraction of the dirt-loaded backwash water is done by overflowing, or under siphon action.
