A multiple density monolithic refractory material includes a first layer of refractory fiber material having a first density connected to a second layer of refractory fiber material having a second density. The second density is greater than the first density. The fibers of the first layer are intertwined with the fibers of the second layer to form a mechanical connection between the layers. An electric coil may be positioned between the layers to form a burner for a gas- fuel fireplace. The monolithic material is formed by providing a bath of fibers, binder, and water; providing a mold; positioning a low density refractory material layer in the mold; and moving at least a portion of the bath through the low density refractory material layer to deposit the fibers of the bath against the low density refractory material layer.
