ABSTRACT A conjugate for use in a labelling system comprises avidin or streptavidin linked to a carrier particle, having more than fifteen amino groups on its surface, which are individually capable of being labelled with an operable label. The carrier particle is capable of being linked to the avidin or streptavidin to form the conjugate. The conjugate is particularly useful in forming a fluorescent reagent system. The carrier particle is labelled with a plurality of ligand moieties forming with a lanthanide metal ion, fluorescent chelates attached to the plurality of amino groups to provide at least fifteen labels. The fluorescent reagent system, when excited to fluoresce, emits fluorescent radiation with an intensity amplified compared to intensity of fluorescent radiation emitted by the plurality of fluorescent lanthanide metal ion chelate moieties in a solution whereby the fluorescent reagent is void of any quenching effects due to multiple labelling in the fluorescent reagent system. The fluorescent labelling system is particularly useful in binding assays.
