-18- Multiple Speed Gear Transmission Abstract A multiple speed gear transmission of the sliding gear type includes an input shaft disposed on a first axis, and a layshaft disposed on a second axis and having a forward gear, a reverse gear and first and second drive gears connected for joint rotation therewith. A reverse idler gear is connected to the reverse gear, and a first sliding gear is used for connecting the input shaft to either the forward gear or the reverse idler gear and driving the layshaft in either direction of rotation. An output shaft disposed on the first axis is selectively connected to one of the first and second drive gears by second and third sliding gears respectively. Five forward and four reverse speeds can be provided by the transmission using four conveniently shiftable coupling elements.
