A conventional copper or nickel converter is modified by stripping away all individual tuyere bodies, pipes, flexible air lines, tuyere support clamps and bolts, and replacing them with common air box system spanning multiple tuyere openings. Individual tuyere sleeves are provided in each tuyere opening. The air box and tuyere sleeves are mounted on the converter shell independently of one another.
