Abstract A universal motor voltage selection connector unit is a plug-in construction including a receptacle member mounted to the motor and a movable plug member which is selectively plugged into the motor mounted receptacle for motor voltage and/or rotation selec- tion. A basic connector unit for a threee phase motor can also be mounted to a single phase motor to provide for appropriate voltage and rotation selection. The receptacle has 15 terminal sockets in a fixed 3 X 5 array. The sockets are connected to the motor wind- ing. Power line terminal means are also provided. The plug has a 15 terminal array with U-shaped shorting elements differently arranged for three phase and single phase motors. A three phase plug has 6 shorting elements arranged in a 3 X 4 matrix to interangage and mate with two different 3 X 4 matrixes of the recepta- cle, dependent upon 180° orientations of the plug into the receptacle. The motor coils are connected to each other and to the incoming power lines, with the 180° orientations of the plug establishing different winding connections as dictated by the incoming power supply, or the desired direction of rotation. For a single phase motor, a first group of the terminals of the receptacle are assigned to voltage selection and a second set of terminals are assigned to rotational direction selection. A voltage plug is provided for voltage selection and a separate rotational plug is provided for rotation selection. The first column of the 3 X 5 matrix of the receptacle is used for motor voltage selection, while the last matrix column is used for rotation selection. The voltage plug is a 1 X 5 matrix for the 180° orientation. The rational plug is a 1 X 5 matrix plug for 180° orientation. The various plugs can be specially encoded to prevent erro- neous insertion of the voltage plug and the rotational plug.
