ABSTRACT A class of controllers is disclosed for electric motors of an open-circuit-armature-windings type in which energy recovery from interrupted armature windings improves operation and efficiency. Such motors have at least one repeatable section and comprise a stator and an armature mounted for relative movement. The stator has, for each repeatable section, two stator magnetic poles inductively linked by at least one stator winding or energized by permanent magnets. The armature has a magnetic structure and, for each repeatable section, multiple open circuit windings displaced from each other in the direction of relative movement and inductively linking the structure. The motor and controller provide for simultaneously establishing individual electrical connections to from none to at least one of the armature windings, and, when stator windings are used, to from none to all of the stator windings. Control of the electrical connections to the armature windings allows varying the number and strength levels as avail- able of the armature electromagnetic poles, and, levels stator windings are used, allows varying the number and strength levels as available of the energized stator magnetic poles; no more than two armature electromagnetic poles are formed per repeat- able section. The controller can vary the orientation of armature poles with respect to the stator poles for maximum effectiveness and reversing direction of the generation of force and torque. The controllers also cooperatively control the electrical connections and the orientations to thereby control both the magnitude and direction of force and torque generated by the motor. These controllers apply to all sizes of such motors and are expected to increase all motor applications.
