ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a multi-station communication system having a plurality of stations coupled to a common communication medium for carrying packets among the stations; in which at the end of each packet, each station selects a different time slot for transmission and a first station with a packet to transmit which reaches its selected time slot before any other station has begun transmission is enabled to transmit that packet; each station comprising: means for transmitting, as part of each packet, data from which a first time value which is a function of a time delay between the end of the last packet and the selected time slot of the present packet can be derived; means for deriving a first time value from the data contained in the present packet received; means for measuring a time period which is a function of a time delay between the end of the last packet and the beginning of the present packet to produce a second time value; and means for comprising the first time value and the second time value to identify a slot error signal if the first and second time values do not have a predetermined relationship.
