- 29 - A Multiprocessor Computer for Solving Sets of Equations Abstract A multiple-instruction stream-multiple-data stream computer system and method for solving a set of equations which can be represented in matrix form. An illustrative embodiment of the invention combines a novel method for solving a set of equations represented as a matrix with a novel multiprocessor computer architecture that is capable of exploiting the parallelism created by the method. The method partitions the task of solving a matrix into quasi-distinct tasks such that as many of the quasi-distinct tasks can be executed in parallel as possible. The multiprocessor architecture comprises a number of Von Neumann computers that areinterconnected via an interprocessor communications network which is controlled by special purpose network processor. The network processor assures that each Von Neumann computer is efficiently utilized executing quasi-distinct tasks and routes whatever information needs to be communications between the respective computers.
