The invention relates to the identification of and use of a biologically pure culture of a cellulose producing microorganism, preferably a prokaryote, which microorganism is capable, during fermentation of reversal of direction of cellulose ribbon extrusion which produces a cellulose ribbon-bundle having a width of at least two cellulose ribbons. The microorgainsm may be of the genus Acetobacter, Agrobacterium, Rhizobium, Pseudomonas or Alcaligenes. The invention includes a method for obtaining microbial cellulose having superior structural strength and being an apparent polymorph of cellulose I and cellulose II. The thus produced ribbons are stronger than the corresponding amount of single randomly dispersed cellulose ribbons.
