ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A multi-speed transmission having a plurality of planetary gear sets in series, the first of which includes planet pinions with a plurality of gearing diameters and a drive sun or ring gear, and the second of which includes an input drive sun or ring gear connected to the output of the first planetary gear set which is the planetary pinion carrier thereof. The second planetary gear set may be a range gear, a split gear or the transmission may include both of these as second and third planetary gear sets,in series. At least some of the clutches and brakes of the planetary gear sets are friction disc couplings and include an arrangement whereby air can flow through the area between adjacent discs, even when the coupling is engaged, to provide an air bearing therefor. This can include the arrangement wherein alternate discs of the fric- tion disc couplings are sinusoidal in shape while the others are plane.
