ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A multy-party telephone system is provided for connecting, with a limited number of wires, telephone sets included in the system, to at least one external line and to each other respectively. The system contains arrangements for obtaining an exchange of information between the telephone sets and a control unit included in a central unit of the system. All signalling between the telephone sets and the central unit is carried out digitally. A first line system is provided for signalling by means of digital code words between the telephone sets and the central unit. This includes a first pair of wires for signalling in a first direction and a second pair of wires for signalling in a second direction for each of the telephone sets. A second line system is provided for transmitting speech signals to and from the telephone sets with one pair of wires for each of the telephone sets. A common transmitting unit for all the telephone sets is included in the central unit for storing of information concerning activation signals and for continuous transmission of the activating signals by means of diphase modulation to all of the telephone sets simultaneously through the first pair of wires. The transmitting unit is successively updated by the central unit, a code receiver included in each of the telephone sets for receiving the signal transmitted from the central unit and for extracting bit synchronization from said signals, a code sender included in each of the telephone sets for continuous transmission of diphase modulated function- and condition signals through the second pairs of wires, a code receiver, included in the central unit and common for all of the telephone sets, for receiving said signals transmitted from the telephone sets and a device, included in the central unit, for connecting the common code receiver successively to the second pairs of wires belonging to each of the telephone sets.
