An apparatus and a method for stimulating a muscle and monitoring same, and particularly, but not exclusively, the diaphragm muscle. A stimulation probe transmits predetermined electrical stimulation signals to the phrenic nerve of the muscle to be monitored. Electromyogram sensing electrodes and one or more air microphones are positioned over the skin of a patient relative to the muscle to be monitored. Predetermined electrical stimulation signals are transmitted on the phrenic nerve and information signals are received from the electrodes which represent muscle action potentials resulting from the stimulation signals. Acoustical information signals are also received from the microphones indicative of force of contraction of the muscle. These signals are compared to produce resultant signals indicative of the functioning of the muscle in response to the stimulation signals.
