Pharmaceutical compositions containing an effective amount of a neuromuscular blocking agent such as vecuronium bromide and from 0.01 to 30% of at least one zwitterionic substance as a stabiliser are described. The zwitterionic substance can be glycine, serine, cysteine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, proline, hydroxyproline, alanine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, tryptophan, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine and/or phosphatidylethanolamine, but glycine and serine are particularly preferred. An effective method of making these compositions is also part of the invention.
