Disclosed is a karaoke-type entertainment system that allows a participant to sing along with a prerecorded song. The system includes a microphone for producing an input vocal signal that corresponds to the singer's voice, and a pitch corrector samples the input vocal signal and determines its pitch. The pitch corrector shifts the pitch of the input signal to correspond to the pitch of a reference note which in turn corresponds to the correct pitch at which the melody is to be sung. The pitch corrector thereby alters the pitch of the input vocal signal to correspond to the pitch of the reference note so that the participant is singing "on pitch" with the melody.
