Abstract: The invention provides new mutant strains of Escherichia coli and relates to their use for the preparation of glutathione. The new mutant strain is (a) active upon an enzyme system of .gamma.-glutamyl-L-cysteine synthetase and glutathione synthetase and capable of releasing the said first enzyme from the inhibition by glutathione, (b) derived from a parent strain also being active upon the said system and capable of releasing the said first enzyme from the inhibition by glutathione, (c) integrated with a chromosome DNA of a foreign strain of the genus Escherichia involving the genetic information as to the first enzyme, and (d) the foreign strain having the same enzymatic characteristics as above. The method involves culturing the new mutant strain, or reacting an enzyme system derived therefrom, in a substrate solution of L-glutamic acid, L-cysteine and glycine.
