Compositions of matter are provided which comprise a mixture of isolated muscle precursor cells with either isolated mesenchymal stem cells or isolated periosteum cells, optionally further including a myoinductive agent. Also provided are a method for inducing isolated human mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate into myogenic cells, a method for producing dystrophin-positive myogenic cells in a mammal with commitment muscle regeneration, and a use of the compositions for treating muscular dystrophy.
