An N-acyl-N-phenyltetrahydrophthalamic acid derivative represented by general formula (I), a process for producing the same, a herbicide containing the same as the active ingredient, an imidoyl chloride derivative as an intermediate for producing the same, and a process for producing the chloride derivative, wherein R1 represents alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxyalkyl, ha- loalkyl, haloalkenyl, haloalkynyl or cyanoalkyl; R represents lower alkyl or lower haloalkyl; and R3 represents lower al- koxy, lower alkenyloxy, lower alkynyloxy, lower alkoxyalkoxy, (un)substituted benzyloxy, lower haloalkoxy or lower alkox- ycarbonyalkoxy. The herbicide is very useful because it can be widely applied to upland field, lowland field, orchard, pasture, lawn, forest and non-crop land, and is highly safe for crops.
