ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: N-Formylcephalosporin C is obtained by reacting cephalosporin C with a formylating agent of the formula: HCOO-SO3M (I) in which M represents a metallic or organic quaternary ammonium monovalent cation, at a pH in the range of about 5 to 9.5. The compound of the invention can be readily transformed into 7-amino- cephalosporanic acid which is a valuable intermediate for producing cephalosporin-type antibodies.
