A process for manufacture of novel polymeric halo derivatives or chitosan (e.g., terpolymer comprising 1-35 % 2-deoxy- 2-acetamidoglucose units, 1-90 % 2-deoxy-2-aminoglucose units, and 8-95 % 2-deoxy-2-haloaminoglucose units) involving the reaction of chitosan or a chitosan salt with a halogenating agent (e.g., sodium hypochlorite). The N-halochitosans are effective as flocculating aids.
