The present invention relates to the novel finding that homocysteine affects the initiation and/or progress of atherosclerosis via a receptor-mediated growth factor effect on vascular smooth muscle cells. This growth factor effect can be inhibited by N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonists via a unique receptor that is in the NMDA receptor family. Through the use of cloning and other procedures, this homocysteine receptor can be characterized in order to develop novel pharmacologic strategies that address the receptor for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.
On a récemment découvert que l'homocystéine affecte le déclenchement et/ou la progression de l'athérosclérose par un effet du facteur de croissance induit par le récepteur sur les cellules des muscles lisses de la paroi vasculaire. L'effet du facteur de croissance peut être inhibé par des antagonistes de N-méthyl-D-aspartate par l'intermédiaire d'un récepteur unique de la famille du récepteur NMDA. Par le clonage et autres procédures, ce récepteur d'homocystéine peut être caractérisé afin de développer de nouvelles stratégies pharmacologiques impliquant le récepteur dans la prévention et le traitement de l'athérosclérose.
