ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE N-chloro and N-bromo derivatives of 2-imidazolidinones having substituents at the 4 and 5 positions of the ring are described which have utility as biocides, e.g., bactericides, and are useful as disinfectants and sanitizers. These compounds are of the formula: Image wherein X and X' are each halogen selected from the group chlorine and bromine, R1, R2, R3, R4 are each selected from the group consist- ing of hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, hydroxy, and substi- tuted phenyl, said phenyl substituents being each selected from the group consisting of C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, and hydroxy, provided that not more than one of the substituents R1-R4 is hydrogen, provid- ed further that when both X and X' are chlorine, not more than three of the substituents R1-R4 are methyl.
