ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A compound of the formula Image [i.e. N-(5-methoxybenzofuran-2-ylcarbonyl)-N'-benzyl piperazine] or its acid addition salt with a physiologically compatible acid, a process for its preparation by a reaction selected from the group consisting of (a) reacting N-benzyl-piperazine and 5-methoxycumarilic acid at an elevated temperature and in the absence of a condensa- tion agent; or (b) reacting N-benzyl-piperazine and 5-methoxycumarilic acid at a temperature of at least 15°C in the presence of a con- densation agent; or (c) reacting N-benzyl-piperazine with an activated deri- vative of 5-methoxycumarilic acid; or (d) reacting N-(5-methoxycoumaroyl)-piperazine with a compound selected from the group consisting of a benzyl halide, a benzylalkylsulfonate and a benzylarylsulfonate; and (e) if desired, converting the thus obtained compound into a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. These compounds find use as a psychotherapeutic medicament and is largely free of the side-effects found with known substances such as imipramine.
