ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Compounds of formula (II) Image are disclosed wherein R1 represents a carboxylic acid group or a pharmaceut- ically acceptable salt or ester of a carboxylic acid group; or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkanoylalkyl, hydroxyalkanoyl, or an optionally salted or esterified carboxyalkanoyl group; q is zero or an integer from 1 to 12; Alk repre?ents a straight or branched chain alkylene group; R2 and R3 are the same or different and each is hydrogen, halogen, C1-8 alkyl, C1-8 alkoxy; R4 is hydrogen, halogen C1-8 alkoxy; halo (C1-8) alkyl, nitro, carboxylic acid or a salt or ester thereof, hydroxy, amino, alkylamino, acylamino; or any two groups R2, R3, R4, on adjacent carbon atoms form the residue of a fused benzene ring; R is a carboxylic ester group, a formyl, alkanoyl, C1-12 alkyl group or a substituted carbamyl group of formula CO.NRxRy in which Rx and Ry are each a C1-6 alkyl group or together form a C5-C6 alkylene moiety; which compounds have hypolipidaemic activity. Methods of preparation are also disclosed.
