ABSTRACT The invention is concerned with novel N- substituted glutamic acid derivatives having the general formula: (I) Image wherein X and Y represent, independently, an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; A represents a methylene group, an ethylene group or ethylidene group; R represents a di-substituted phenyl group, a naphthyl group, a tolyl group, trifluoromethyl phenyl group, an iodophenyl group, a fluorophenyl group, or a chlorophenyl group; with the proviso that if both X and Y represent an oxygen atom and A represents a methylene group, R represents a group other than a p-chlorophenyl, p- iodophenyl or p-fluorophenyl group, and salts thereof. The compounds of the invention have a selective herbicidal effect.
