Tertiary N-vinylamides are polymerized, optionally to- gether with further monomers, in the presence of aliphatic hydrocarbons, at a temperature or from 0 to 150°C using two types of initiator one of which is insoluble and the other soluble in the hydrocarbon used. The pulverulent or granular polymer obtained has a diminished content of resi- dual monomer. It is suitable as protective colloid or dis- persing agent for emulsion or suspension polymerizations.
