An applicator for decorating finger nails by applying nail polish to the finger nails is described. The applicator consists of an elongated member having a first end and a handle portion. A foam applicator is formed on the first end of the elongated member. The foam applicator is adapted to produce a non-uniform application of nail polish on the finger nails. Perferably, the foam applicator is made from a foam material having a non-uniform density and a non- uniform cell structure. Natural sponge makes an excellent material for constructing foam applicators for the present invention. The applicator may also include a nail polish applicator pad adapted to apply the nail polish in a substantially uniform fashion.
