The invention provides a method for producing an ordered nano-structure on a substrate surface, wherein the surface has an anisotropic lattice. A single radical is generated at a site on the lattice, and reaction with a chain propagating organic molecule is initiated. The chain-propagating organic molecule forms a covalent bond with the surface, and in turn forms a radical, which reacts, in a manner specific to the surface anisotropy, to form a second radical site on the lattice. This sequence continues, building up an ordered nano-structure on the surface, the structure of which is dictated by the surface structure. Preferred substrates are semiconductors, such as Si(100) and Ge(100).
