Disclosed are composite membranes for removing contaminants from water, the membranes comprising a water-permeable thin film polymerized on a porous support membrane and, optionally, a mixture, including a surface coating material having a different chemical composition than the thin film, coated on the thin film. In one aspect, one or more layers of the composite membranes further comprise nanoparticles.
