A method and apparatus for precise measurement of the distance and direction from a magnetic field sensor (30) to a nearby magnetic field source includes an elongated iron core solenoid (50) driven by a repetitive, nonsinusoidal current source (56). In the near field the solenoid (50) has two spaced, temporally varying magnetic poles, and measurement of the distance and direction to this source includes analysis of field components which vary in synchronism with the current source (56).

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de mesurer précisément la distance et la direction depuis un capteur (30) de champ magnétique jusqu'à une source de champ magnétique située à proximité. L'appareil comprend un solénoïde (50) à noyau de fer allongé, entraîné par une source de courant (56) répétitive non sinusoïdale. Dans le champ proche, ce solénoïde (50) présente deux pôles magnétiques espacés, variant dans le temps, la mesure de la distance et de la direction vers ladite source consistant à analyser les composantes du champ, qui varient en synchronisme avec cette source de courant (56).
