ABSTRACT A method is disclosed of forming the neck portion of a synthetic resin bottle, The method includes forming a parison of synthetic resin, the parison having a major neck portion of predetermined thickness and a mouth edge portion thinner than the predetermined thickness; holding the neck in a neck holding device; heating the mouth edge portion of the neck to an orientable temperature; and inserting an orienting rod into the neck portion of the parison. The orienting rod has a converging tapered head at its leading end and a straight body portion, the straight body portion and the largest diameter of the tapered head portion being of a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the neck portion prior to insertion of the orienting rod, the largest diameter of the tapered head being smaller than the diameter of the straight body portion to thereby define a stepped shoulder therebetween. The mouth edge portion of the neck is stretched outwardly by the head portion of the orienting rod to fill the void defined at the stepped shoulder and to thereby orient the mouth edge portion of the neck.
