ABSTRACT A needle assembly is disclosed which comprises a hub to which a needle is fixed. A spring is coupled to the hub and surrounds the needle. The free end of the spring retains an end cap which is intended to cover the tip of the needle after use of the needle assembly. A clamp may be used to maintain the spring compressed so that the needle assembly can be used and after use the clamp is removed so that the needle biases the end cap into a position where it covers the end of the needle. Alternatively, a deformable cylinder may be coupled with the hub and have clip members which engage corresponding clip recess on the end cap to maintain the spring compressed. Upon deformation of the deformable member the end cap is released from the deformable member so that the spring biases the end cap into a position encapsulating the end of the needle.
