Conventional needle safety devices have a housing hinged to a base attached to the needle, the housing having a lock that engages the needle when closed. In the present invention, the housing has a fluid-absorbing material such as a foam, which contacts the needle before engagement of the lock. The needle can pass through the fluid-absorbing material, which absorbs any fluid collected at the tip of the needle.
