A negative electrode carbonaceous material according to the present invention is suitably used for production of non-aqueous electrolyte-type secondary cell. The negative electrode carbonaceous material is in the form of a sintered carbon body produced by sintering a mesophase carbon as a carbon precursor, the sintered carbon body having a true specific gravity of 1.50 to 1.80 g/ml. The present invention is further concerned with a method of producing such a negative electrode carbonaceous material and a non-aqueous electrolyte-type secondary cell using such a negative electrode carbonaceous material.
