A nematic liquid crystal composition comprising compounds of the general formulas (I-1) to (I-5) each having naphthalene-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl, and a liquid display device using the same. This nematic liquid crystal composition broadens the operating temperature range of liquid crystal display characteristics due to an improvement in co- solubility and storage at low temperature, thereby making it possible to improve a reduction in driving voltage and a change in temperature and to attain comparatively fast response characteristics for a predetermined driving voltage. Accordingly, the nematic liquid crystal composition is best suited for use as TN, STN, TFT, IPS, MVA, OCB, ECB, PC, PNLC, PDLC, PSCT or the like.

L'invention concerne une composition de cristaux liquides nématiques qui renferme un composé représenté par l'une des formules générales (I-1) à (I-5) contenant naphtalène-2,6-diyle, décahydronaphtalène-2,6-diyle, ou 1,2,3,4-tétrahydronaphtalène-2,6-diyle. L'invention concerne également un écran à cristaux liquides utilisant cette composition. Cette composition de cristaux liquides nématiques permet d'augmenter la plage de température de fonctionnement d'un écran à cristaux liquides, par exemple par une amélioration de sa compatibilité et de sa stabilité au stockage, d'une réduction de sa tension de commande, et d'une amélioration de son changement à la température, facilitant ainsi l'obtention d'une réponse relativement rapide pour une tension de commande donnée. Cette composition est donc particulièrement apte à être utilisée dans TN, STN, TFT, IPS, MVA, OCB, ECB, PC, PNLC, PDLC, PSCT, ou similaire.
