A method is provided for connecting a source of digital data to a computer network. The source of digital data transmits data over a wireless transmission medium to a wireless service carrier, the wireless service carrier multiplexing the digital data onto a high speed digital telephone line. The method comprises the steps of receiving the digital data at a communications chassis such as a network access server, extracting, from the digital data, network access authentication data comprising at least one of the following: (a) a telephone number called by the source of digital data, or (b) a telephone number associated with the source of digital data; transmitting the authentication data over a local area or wide area computer network connected to a network authentication server for the computer network; determining, in the network authentication server, from the transmitted authentication data whether the remote user is permitted to access the computer network; and the authentication server responsively notifying the network access server the results of the step of determining; and authorizing the source of data to access the computer network if the step of determining results in a positive response.
L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de connecter une source de données numériques à un réseau d'ordinateurs. La source de données numériques transmet des données sur un support de transmission sans fil vers un service de télécommunications sans fil, le service de télécommunications sans fil permettant de multiplexer les données numériques sur une ligne téléphonique numérique grande vitesse. Le procédé comporte les étapes consistant à recevoir les données numériques sur une structure de communications tel qu'un serveur d'accès au réseau; extraire à partir des données numériques des données d'authentification d'accès au réseau qui comportent au moins un des éléments suivants: (a) un numéro de téléphone appelé par la source de données numériques, ou (b) un numéro de téléphone associé à la source de données numériques; transmettre les données d'authentification sur un réseau d'ordinateurs local ou longue distance connecté à un serveur d'authentification de réseau du réseau d'ordinateurs; déterminer dans le serveur d'authentification, à partir des données d'authentification transmises, si l'usager à distance est autorisé à accéder au réseau d'ordinateurs, le serveur d'authentification indiquant en réponse au serveur d'accès au réseau les résultats de cette étape de détermination; et autoriser la source de données à accéder au réseau d'ordinateurs si l'étape de détermination aboutit à un résultat positif.
