A method and system is disclosed for handling multimedia messages when the intended recipient is unavailable. The telecommunication based (88) method and system allows a party (80) to leave a greeting message which will be furnished to a caller (124) when the party (80) is unavailable. The method and system furtherallows a caller (124) to leave a multimedia message for the unavailable intendedrecipient (80). The method and system further alerts the party (86) that a multimedia message has been recorded and allows the party (80) to retrieve the multimedia message.
