A combined wide area network (WAN) port/synchronization unit that receives inputs including data and timing information and that synchronizes the data for transmission. The unit includes the following components. A network interface receives the input and removes data and primary timing information from the input (402). A data-path function processes the data(404). A reference selection unit receives timing information from the network interface as well as timing information from a secondary combined WAN port/synchronization unit(406). A synchronization control unit selects the most reliable timing information from the plurality of timing information inputs to the reference selection unit(408). A multiplexor multiplexes the timing information with the processed data across a link (410).
L'invention porte sur une unité combinée porte/synchronisation pour réseau à grande distance (WAN) recevant des entrées comprenant des données et des signaux de synchronisation et synchronisant les données en vue de leur transmission. Ladite unité comporte les éléments d'information suivants: une interface réseau recevant les signaux et en (402) soustrayant les signaux primaires de synchronisation, une fonction de transfert/traitement des données (404), une unité de sélection de référence recevant de l'interface les informations de synchronisation de l'interface réseau et de l'unité combinée (406) "porte de WAN/synchronisation"; et une unité de commande de synchronisation sélectionnant les informations de synchronisation les plus fiables des différentes sources reçues par l'unité (408) de sélection de référence; et un multiplexeur multiplexant sur une liaison (410) les informations de synchronisation avec les données traitées.
