An automatic repeater/bridge changeover device includes: port/portal units each of which is connected to the IEEE1394 bus; physical layer processing units which are connected to the port/portal units, respectively; link layer processing units which are connected to the physical layer processing units, respectively; and an upper-level layer processing unit which is connected to the link layer processing units. The automatic repeater/bridge changeover device also includes: a repeater fabric with switch which is connected between the physical layer processing units; a bridge fabric with switch which is connected between the physical layer processing units; and a controller which performs the switching control over the switches of the repeater and bridge fabrics.
