A novel networking architecture and technique for transmitting both cells and packets or frames across a common switch fabric, effected, at least in part, by utilizing a common set of algorithms for the forwarding engine (the ingress side) and a common set of algorithms for the QoS management (the egress part) that are provided for each I/O module to process packet/cell information without impacting the correct operation of ATM switching and without transforming packets into cells for transfer across the switch fabric.
Architecture et technique de mise en réseau, permettant de transmettre aussi bien des cellules et des paquets que des trames dans une structure de commutation commune. La transmission se fait, au moins partiellement, au moyen d'une série d'algorithmes commune pour le moteur de transfert (côté entrée) et d'une série d'algorithmes commune pour la gestion de la qualité de service (partie sortie). Les algorithmes, fournis pour chaque module E/S, permettent de traiter les informations de paquets/cellules sans interférer avec le fonctionnement correct du commutateur ATM et sans transformer les paquets en cellules pour leur passage dans la structure de commutation.
