ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A neutral gear detector for motor vehicle engine transmissions having a gear shift rod whose position is indicative of a selected gear has a first mounting bracket securable to a vehicle near the gear shift rod, a switch carried by the first mounting bracket and having an actuator movable between two positions to effect operation of the switch, a pivoted member mounted on the first mounting brackets and pivotally movable relative thereto to cause the actuator to move from one position to another, and a trigger rod securable to the gear shift rod for movement therewith in a direction perpendicular to the length of the trigger rod when the gear shift moves from neutral gear to another gear. The trigger rod projects into an aperture in the pivoted member and is operable to position the pivoted member to cause the actuator to be in one position when the gear shift rod is in a neutral gear position and to position the pivoted member to cause the actuator to be in the other position when the gear shift rod is in a driving gear posi- tion.
