A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (VI), optionally in enantiomerically-enriched form (R or S), comprises chemoselective reduction of a novel compound of formula (V), wherein Ar1 and Ar2 are independently selected from optionally-substituted aromatic or hetero-aromatic groups having up to 20 C atoms, Ak is C1-20 alkyl, and R is H or C1-20 alkyl.
