A process for the esterification of free fatty acids comprised in an oil or a fat, the process comprising: mixing the oil or fat with an alcohol, a liquid acid catalyst and a reticulated hydrophilic solid, thereby forming a mixture; and heating the mixture at a temperature between about 200C and about 15O0C is described. Also, a process for producing biodiesel comprising the above- mentioned steps and further comprising either transesterifying the triglycerides of the oil after the above-mentioned steps or hydrolyzing the triglycerides of the oil or fat prior to the above-mentioned steps is also described. Finally, a reactor for esterifying free fatty acids comprised in an oil or a fat comprising a chamber containing a hydrophilic reticulated hydrophilic solid, the chamber having an inlet for introducing reactants into the chamber, the reactants comprising the oil or fat, an alcohol and a liquid acid catalyst, and having an outlet for recovering the reactants; means for conveying the reactants from the inlet to the outlet through reticulated hydrophilic solid; and means for maintaining the chamber at one or more predetermined temperatures is described.
L'invention concerne un procédé pour l'estérification d'acides gras libres compris dans une huile ou dans une graisse. Le procédé comporte les opérations consistant à mélanger l'huile ou la graisse avec un alcool, un catalyseur acide liquide et un solide hydrophile réticulé pour former ainsi un mélange; et à chauffer le mélange à une température allant d'environ 200°C à environ 1500°C. L'invention concerne également un procédé de production de biodiesel comprenant les étapes mentionnées ci-dessus et comprenant en outre soit la transestérification des glycérides de l'huile après les étapes mentionnées ci-dessus, soit l'hydrolyse des triglycérides de l'huile ou de la graisse avant les étapes mentionnées ci-dessus. Enfin, l'invention concerne un réacteur permettant l'estérification d'acides gras libres compris dans une huile ou dans une graisse, lequel réacteur comporte une chambre contenant un solide hydrophile réticulé. La chambre est munie d'une entrée permettant l'introduction des réactifs, lesquels réactifs comprennent l'huile ou la graisse, un alcool et un catalyseur acide liquide, et d'une sortie pour récupérer les réactifs. Le réacteur comporte également des moyens pour transporter les réactifs de l'entrée à la sortie à travers le solide hydrophile réticulé et des moyens pour maintenir la chambre à une ou plusieurs températures prédéterminées.
