A new newsprint for the newspaper press using cold-set ink is disclosed. The newsprint comprises a base stack composed mainly of mechanical pulp and a coating layer comprising up to 30% of a needle form pigment. The average oil absorptiveness of the pigments in the coating layer should be greater than 65 cc/100g. The newsprint is especially useful for high quality multicolor printing on the high speed web-fed presses using cold-set ink and is characterized by an improved reproducibility of dots and sharpness of print pattern compared with usual newsprint.
