A nickel electrode for alkaline secondary batteries includes a porous sintered nickel substrate loaded with a nickel hydroxide-based active material, the nickel electrode having a configuration wherein a surface portion of the active material is provided with a combination of a first coating layer of a cobalt compound, and with a second coating layer of a complex compound of at least one of nickel, magnesium, calcium, barium, strontium, scandium, yttrium, a lanthanide or bismuth, or of a complex compound of them and cobalt. Alternatively, the first coating layer is one of the complex compounds mentioned, and the second coating layer is a cobalt compound. The nickel electrodes, and batteries containing them, exhibit improved self discharge and high-current discharge capacity characteristics.
