ABSTRACT Discloses a process for replenishing spent nickel sulfate electrowinning electrolyte using refractory nickel oxide as a source of nickel wherein the dissolution of nickel from the refractory oxide is enhanced by the presence of perdisulfate, permonosulfate, trivalent nickel or ionic or molecular species derived by contacting the spent electrolyte with ozone.
